VR does two things exceptionally well, Horror and escape the room games (it does everything else really well too but these two genres really shine in vr).
So armed with my “Thinking Brain Mole” (think seeing eye dog but for the hard of thinking, and my co-host for livestreaming Mr Mole who has a knack for these things fits the bill) I strapped on my headset and tried to escape 🙂
This is one of the harder escape the room games i have tried and the 1 hour 5 video attached will show that i went from confidence to frustration back to confidence and finally to “i don’t think we are going to make it” however i enjoyed almost every minute of it.
ROOMSCALE / ENVIRONMENT / GRAPHICS
The opening menu roomscale could do with a neon “HEY MUPPET TURN AROUND” (something the developer is going to work on lol) but is fine.
The main game area is well done, not too many objects that your gonna get confused but a few red herrings too, and a nice easter egg 🙂
(though shame to see the great Winston Churchill hanging crooked!, well i am British).
The graphics are pretty good but they are not really key in this type of game, in these games puzzles are king, you want to be challenged, not look at shiny shinies.
Movement can be teleporting or sliding so the best of both worlds there and with sliding i did not feel sick at any point so did not really use the teleporting (but then i have a good VR stomach)
There was a few cases of having to crawl on the floor which although standard in this genre is a little frustrating (Pro Tip: do not use virtual table to help yourself up)
The actual design of the area and of the puzzles is very good, and the red herrings are well done too.
Oh and a particular book had me smiling ear to ear.
No real issues though we did manage to break a draw (i fell through it) and glitch out a lid, the dev is aware of these minor issues.
Towards the end of test session i did stat to notice a bit of a frame rate issue, however it was minor and i was streaming in HD while two physics object were broken so it is not really a surprise the game was a tiny stressed lol, overall i would say there is no real issues here.
The controls are shown on the main menu (when facing the right way …ooops lol) however it did take me a while to realise i could open the books (a fact the developer is going to fix, with luck he will make them open when holding with one hand and touching with the other as that is an intuitive book opening gesture that i tried first :))
- Some of the puzzles are very hard and completing them gives a real sense of achievement.
- an hour passed with me mostly not noticing, a sign of a good game.
- The developer is actively improving his game and genuinely cares about it.
- It is really cheap (*see note at end of review)
- Some of the puzzles are very hard. (hey look it is a pro and a con)
- You will have to crawl on the floor.
- As with games in this genre there is not much replayability, however it is priced accordingly.
The first try video:
This video was recorded live on twitch, the voice you hear besides mine is Mr Mole. WARNING there are massive spoilers in this video. Hell we solve a LOT of the puzzles.
If you like escape the room games you need this one in your library, completing it will give you a few bragging rights too as it is far from easy, thoroughly enjoyable game. Yes i recommend it.
